General Post Office, Dublin

Overview

The General Post Office (GPO) is the headquarters of the Irish postal service, located in the centre of Dublin’s O’Connell Street. The building was designed by Francis Johnston, an architect with the Board of Works. The GPO is one of Ireland’s most famous buildings, and was the last of the great Georgian public buildings erected in the capital.

Designer Group completed consecutive contracts to upgrade the electrical services in the building. The works were carried out in a live working environment on a floor by floor basis; five floors were updated over four phases.

It was a challenging environment due to the age of the building and it’s location in the centre of Dublin that was not sympathetic to the delivery of large items of plant. There were a number of key interface systems that needed to be reinstalled and maintained, for example the data and fire alarm equipment. A high security presence was maintained during the works.
