Overview

The Co-operative Group is the UK’s largest mutual business, owned not by private shareholders but by over six million consumers. The Group operates 4,800 retail trading outlets, employs more than 100,000 people and has an annual turnover of more than £13bn.

Designer Group carried out the full mechanical and electrical design and build installation to the new distribution centre in Bristol, United Kingdom. This project is the south distribution centre for the Co-operative comprising of extensive distribution space with both cold and dry storage, external forecourt with truck charging bays, office space and a vehicle maintenance building unit.

Designer Group carried out installation of the following services

Electrical Installation

  • Full design and build based on the Co-operative’s performance specification
  • Incoming 11kV HV cabling from RMU substation installation included provision for back up generation
  • Extensive busbar power distribution to eliminate long cable runs and to provide flexibility in terms of future connections. Busbar ranging from 800A – 2400A
  • Aluminium busbar was used to reduce weight and offer an economic solution
  • The lighting installation includes special rack distribution lighting, office, cold storage LED lighting and emergency lighting. The warehouse lighting system is fed from lighting busbar
  • Lighting control, in the warehouse and cold store area each light fitting has a dedicated lighting control sensor to detect movement using microwave technology
  • External lighting including extensive column floodlighting within the truck-park area
  • Vehicle hook-up points
  • DHW and CWS services to offices and warehouse areas
  • Small power and lighting to office and operations office including under floor power distribution busbar
  • Lightning protection and surge suppression
  • Cold storage under-floor heating and controls
  • Specialist refrigeration equipment supplies
  • The project was successfully delivered over a 5 month period
